TBR update: year four – How much have I read?

For the last four years, I have been working hard to get through all of the books I own. As a reader, I fall victim to the allure of new books and it’s easy to buy them faster than they can be read. This year, my shelf went through a good purge, where I removed a number of books I had lost interest in. It would have been nice to have read those books but at some point, you have to admit that the books that have been sitting there for 10 years are no longer what you want to read. It’s time for a TBR update: year four, so let’s see how much I have read and the progress on my large TBR.

TBR update: year four

The read & reference shelf

For the most part, this shelf houses the books I have read along with my non-fiction books. The number of books on this shelf changes regularly, as more read books are added. This also houses an overflow of unread books that don’t currently fit on my other shelves.

The pile of unread books. It’s not too bad but more than I thought it would be.

I’m actually surprised by how many unread books are on this one. A lot of these used to be housed on my fantasy shelf, but that one has been slowly taken over by manga, so these books were shuffled onto this shelf instead. Even so, this pile isn’t too bad and I feel like I can get through many of these soon. A bunch of them are partially read series, so I simply need to sit down and get through those books.

The manga shelf

My favorite shelf of all is my manga shelf. I have been steadily growing my collection of manga a lot over the past few years, as it’s quickly become my go-to for reading. This shelf in particular houses a lot of my favorite manga series, but not all of them, because there are too many to fit on a single bookshelf. This is the shelf that changes the most because I am constantly rearranging it to better display the book or to make that next volume fit.

Look at all those manga! The shelf before the unread books were removed.

A very small pile of unread books from the manga shelf.

All things considered, I’d say I have done pretty well with keeping up with this shelf. The few books that are unread are ones I plan to read soon. As you can see, most of the unread books are from the Sword Art Online series. I have been steadily reading that one, however, these ones I haven’t had the chance to get to yet.

The manga & fantasy shelf

My manga collection has grown so much in the last year that it now occupies a second shelf. That shelf also has a number of fantasy books as well. I think this is the shelf that has changed the most over the last 12 months. Much like my main manga shelf, I am constantly rearranging this one to fit in the newest volume as they come in.

The pile is a bit big but not too bad. A lot of what is unread are series where I have read this first book or two but have yet to finish this series. This is something I am actively working on and hope to make a huge dent in this over the next year.

The Star Wars shelf

My Star Wars shelf is my pride and joy. It’s also my most neglected shelf. While I have been reading some of these books over the past year, the progress on this one is slow. I think part of the problem is it’s in a different room from my other shelves. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

The shelf is mighty empty with the unread books removed.
That is a giant pile of unread books! It could be worst, but it could also be much better.

Yikes! I knew it would be bad but seeing all the unread books piled up and nearly nothing left on the shelf has reminded me how badly I need to focus on this shelf. Hopefully, over the next year, I can put a bigger dent into this particular TBR.

I hope you enjoyed my TBR update: year four. How are you doing with your TBR?

  3. Oh my goodness, that is a LOT of unread books, Sarah, wow, where will you start?! I do love a good book sort out, it feels very therapeutic and I nearly always find books I’d forgotten I had. Others, as you say, I won’t read again so they go to charity. I’m due a book sort out before Christmas, this post has reminded me to get started 🙂
