As summer hits full swing and the temperatures continue to climb, it’s important to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is important, but sometimes, you need an extra boost. This is where switchel can save the day. Also called haymaker’s punch, this drink has been around for many years. I first discovered switchel a couple of summers ago and it quickly became my favorite summertime drink. This is the perfect thing to drink on those warmer summer days and especially when you have been out working in the garden or taking a hike. Switchel is a refreshing summer drink that can be made with little effort. It can even be an excellent replacement for sports drinks. Mix up a batch today and be ready for the next hot day when you need a refreshing cool drink.

Switchel – a summer sports drink alternative
One thing to know about switchel is that you may need to adjust the recipe to your taste. After making many batches based upon a recipe I found online, I have found that this version is perfect for me. You may find it too strong or too weak. Give it a try and then adjust the amounts of each ingredient as needed. I also prefer molasses in my switchel over honey.
- 10-12 cups of water
- 1/2 cup honey or molasses
- 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- Add all ingredients into a pitcher.
- Stir thoroughly and refrigerate until cold.
- Serve on a warm summer day for a boost of energy.
This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled so you can have enough switchel to last you and your family for a few days.
Even though we generally don’t get very hot during the summer, though this year seems to be the exception, having a cold glass of switchel on a busy summer day is just what I need for a boost of energy and to ensure I stay hydrated. Have you ever tried switchel?
