October 2021 Use It Up Challenge – Organizers

Gather your storage containers and organizers. It’s time for the October 2021 Use It Up Challenge! This month we are focusing on organizers. For many people who have an overabundance of stuff, the easiest way to deal with it is to throw it in an organizer or fancy box and call it a day. I know I fell into that category for many years. While that technically does remove the clutter from view, it doesn’t actually deal with the issue. If you aren’t careful, this will lead to your home becoming filled with containers of stuff. However, if you have been keeping up with these monthly Use It Up Challenges, you will likely have eliminated quite a bit of the stuff in your home. That means you might have a number of storage containers and organizers left sitting empty. This is the month to deal with those items. Either find a purpose for them – no that doesn’t mean run to the store and buy stuff to fill them with – or get rid of them.

The previous categories this year covered were kitchen items, pet supplies, technology, seeds, movies, outdoor decor, tools, hardware, and school supplies.

What is the Use It Up Challenge?

This is a monthly decluttering challenge that focuses on using the items instead of simply getting rid of them. This helps to reduce waste and also gets your money worth out of those items. Each month, a new category is chosen and we will focus on that category all month long. However, you don’t have to stop once that month ends. Keep decluttering and using up those items all year long. It will have a huge impact on your home and life at the end of the year.

If you are joining in, be sure to share your progress on social media using #IHUseItUp. I’d love to see how everyone is getting along with the challenge.

Where to start

You know all those storage bins and organizers you have tucked away in closets, crawl spaces, under your bed, and every other place in the home? Well, it’s time to pull them all out of their hiding spaces. Clutter hidden in boxes which are then hidden in closets is still clutter that needs to be dealt with.

If you have been keeping up with these monthly challenges, you may find that some of these organizers are empty or close to it. Others may still be filled with stuff. Any that are empty should immediately be put off to the side. Those bins and organizers that still have stuff in them will need to be dealt with.

How to use it up

It’s time to determine if the organizers and the stuff in them are worth keeping, using, or getting rid of. This may not be an easy task depending on what is in those bins. However, the effort will pay off when you gain a lot of space in your home and no longer have to worry about that stack of bins falling out of your closet the next time you open it.

Go through each organizer and see what’s in them. Can those items be used in the near future? Can several bins be consolidated into one? This process will certainly take time, as some boxes make contain a variety of items. Take your time and sort through them carefully. Don’t give it a quick glance and shove it all back in the closet.

As you empty out each bin, make a pile of the items you plan to keep and use, and another pile to sell or donate. Once you have sorted through the items, determine whether you need that organizer. As you remove clutter from your home, the need for bins and organizers diminishes. It’s fine to keep a few around, but don’t shove them all into a storage area in hopes that you will someday use them again – that is a recipe for inviting clutter back into the home.

What I’ll be using up

Over the last few years, throughout my decluttering, I have done a pretty good job of eliminating many of the organizers that we no longer needed. Most of what we have left is used with a purpose and while there may be a time when we no longer need them, at this moment, we still use them. That being said, I know there are a few lurking around that do nothing but collect dust. So, I will be going through everything and ensuring I get rid of those.

I do plan to keep one or two empty Rubbermaid containers because they do come in handy from time to time. Otherwise, any unused organizer will go.

Will you be participating in the October 2021 Use It Up Challenge? What organizers will you be using this month? Any you know you will be getting rid of?
