May 2021 Use It Up Challenge – Movies

Grab your DVDs, Blurays, and some popcorn. It’s time for the May 2021 Use It Up Challenge. This month we are focusing on movies. We all have a collection of movies. The allure of the $5 movie bin at stores has allowed your collection to bloom. But are you actually watching those movies regularly or are they sitting there collecting dust? Let’s deal with this entertaining clutter and reduce that collection down to what you truly want to keep and watch.

The previous categories this year covered were kitchen items, pet supplies, technology, and seeds.

In the first year of this challenge, we have tackled notebooks, candles, cleaning supplies, craft supplies, clothes, bath items, books, food, toys, games, sentimental items, and holiday decorations. Feel free to go back to a previous month’s challenge to ensure that you are giving your home a thorough decluttering.

What is the Use It Up Challenge?

This is a monthly decluttering challenge that focuses on using the items instead of simply getting rid of them. This helps to reduce waste and also gets your money worth out of those items. Each month, a new category is chosen and we will focus on that category all month long. However, you don’t have to stop once that month ends. Keep decluttering and using up those items all year long. It will have a huge impact on your home and life at the end of the year.

If you are joining in, be sure to share your progress on social media using #IHUseItUp. I’d love to see how everyone is getting along with the challenge.

Where to start

Gather up all of your movies. That means all those DVD,s Blurays, and even VHS – yes those still exist in some homes. You may have a large collection or a small one, but make sure to grab them all. Now that they are all together, do a quick once over – there may be a few movies that stand out as ones you no longer want. Take those ones and set them off to the side. These are the ones you know you won’t be keeping anymore.

Next, look for movies you are unsure about. Perhaps it’s been a while since you watched them. Or you used to love it but now you aren’t so sure. Grab those movies a make a second pile.

Any of the movies you know you want to keep and will watch again can go back on the shelf.

Tip: With all the streaming services available now, it may be a good time to also weed out the movies you can watch on those services. Do you really need that DVD when you can watch that particular movie on Netflix or Disney+?

How to use it up

Here’s where this challenge gets fun. You get to watch movies all month long!

That’s right. The best way to use up those DVDs and Blurays is to watch them. There may be movies that you aren’t sure about keeping or not. The best way to decide is to watch that movie. If you really enjoyed it and can see yourself watching it again, then go ahead and keep it. However, if you didn’t enjoy it or it’s one of those movies where it’s a watch once and move on type of deal, then you can put it in the get rid of pile.

Get your whole family involved. Make a weekly family movie night to help you go through these movies while also spending time with your loved ones. They may really love a movie you don’t care for, so you will need to keep those ones.

Once you have gone through your maybe pile, go ahead and donate or sell the movies you no longer want. Check with your local movie rental place, they will often buy used movies for a couple of bucks.

What I will be using up

We have gone through our movies a number of times over the last few years, so I’m not sure if there are any left that we don’t want to keep. However, I will do through them again to be certain that all of them are ones we want to watch again and thus will be kept.

Will you be joining the May 2021 Use It Up Challenge? What movies will you be watching, and possibly getting rid of, this month?
