March 2022 Use It Up Challenge – Decor

Gather your throw pillow, accent pieces, and artwork. It’s time for the March 2022 Use It Up Challenge! This month we are focusing on decor. Whether you live in an apartment or a house, the need to decorate it can be strong. But what happens when you have plenty of decor items but aren’t using them? That leads to clutter-filled closets. It’s time to tackle that clutter in a different way. Instead of getting rid of those items, let’s put them to use. so let’s gather those items, channel our inner interior decorators and use those items. By the end of the month, our homes will be transformed into beautiful spaces and you will have redeemed that closet space.

Some of the previous categories covered in this challenge include seeds, movies, technology, and pet supplies.

What is the Use It Up Challenge?

This is a monthly decluttering challenge that focuses on using the items instead of simply getting rid of them. This helps to reduce waste and also gets your money worth out of those items. Each month, a new category is chosen and we will focus on that category all month long. However, you don’t have to stop once that month ends. Keep decluttering and using up those items all year long. It will have a huge impact on your home and life at the end of the year.

If you are joining in, be sure to share your progress on social media using #IHUseItUp. I’d love to see how everyone is getting along with the challenge.

Where to start

Find all of your decor items. If you happen to have a bunch that is already set up and you are happy with their location then leave them there. However, any other decor piece that may be hiding in a closet, drawer, or other storage space should be gathered.

Once you have them all collected, take a moment to ensure that everything is in good condition. Any item that needs repair should be set aside and fixed as soon as possible. Don’t delay that repair for too long or that item will inevitably be put back in the closet still broken and left to collect dust for months to come.

Next, you should divide all of the items into categories. Those categories will be up to you, but they could be based on color, style, room type, or anything else. This gives you the best way to see what you have to work with.

How to use it up

This is where it starts to get fun. Now that your items are repaired and sorted it’s time to start decorating. Add those throw pillows onto your couch or bed. Put up that artwork to finally show it off. Find the perfect place to set out that figure you love but have had tucked away for years.

Remember, you don’t need to put out everything at once. Doing so may lead to a cluttered look. However, it’s best to use as much as you can, set aside some pieces to pull out later for whenever you feel like changing the look of a room a bit.

What I’ll be using

I would say we don’t have a ton of decor. Most of what we have is already in use. However, I will admit that I have a collection of posters that I have been meaning to put up for quite a few years now. So, this is the perfect opportunity to stop procrastinating and start decorating. I will have to rummage around to see if we have any other decor that is sitting idle and find a use for it.

  1. This was a really helpful post! Altough I like visiting other houses that are well decorated, personally I use just a few. There was a time when I lived with a roommate we used to have lots of decoration which at some point started to look like clutter.

Thank you. I agree that there does reach a point when decor looks like clutter because there is so much of it – my childhood home was like that. But having just enough out to make the space look nice is what I am aiming for.

  2. I am a horrible decorator, so this March 2022 Use It Up Challenge might really help me. I’ll have to get busy rummaging around in my closets. Thanks for the inspiration, and I love the hashtag idea!

  5. Haha, I was in the same mind as you! I started last week with the cushions and throws on my window storage sofa (I actually kept one throw and donated the other one for Ukraine refugees). It looks so fancy now, and not even the kittens dare mess up with it! There is more to do; I’m on a mission!

That’s fantastic that you have a head start on it! Glad to hear those excess blankets have been donated for a good cause. Good luck ith your decluttering and decorating mission.

  6. Since I live at home my mom has a lot of decor items that aren’t in use. I always feel a need to use everything but she doesn’t.

But this is such a good idea to declutter and find things that you didn’t know you had 🙂

Glad you are joining in. We do live in a very wasteful society, so using that we have will help reduce that and save money.

  8. Ooo I’ve never heard of this challenge before but I absolutely love the sound of it. I’ve got lots of little decor pieces that could be used for sure, they are just lying around in drawers at the moment so I’ll defiantly put them to good use. Thank you for sharing this with us lovely Xo
