Homemade pizza breadsticks

Homemade bread is one of my favorite things to make. Bread has such great versatility. It can be made in a loaf, buns or even breadsticks. These delicious homemade pizza breadsticks have become a favorite in our home. Though they take about 2 hours to make from start to finish, they are absolutely worth it. Give these a try next time you are in the kitchen.

Gather and measure all of your ingredients. This will prevent you from missing anything as you go.

In a large mixing bowl, add the first 6 ingredients and mix well. This step can be done by hand or using a stand mixer.

Add 3 1/2 cups of flour. Using the dough hook attachment on a stand mixer, mix at speed 2 until well combined. You may need to scrap the sides of the bowl a few times. This can also be done by hand, though it will take some extra time. If the dough is sticky, add a small amount of dough and mix.

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead several times until it becomes smooth.

Grease a bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with either a towel or plastic wrap and let rise for approximately 45 minutes or until the dough has doubled. Placing it in the oven with the light on works well if it happens to be cool in your house.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Punch down and place on a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to about 1/2-1 inch thick. Using a pizza cutter or a knife, cut the rolled out dough in half. Place each half of the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Cut the dough into strips, about 1 inch wide. Spread them out slightly, leaving a small gap in between each breadstick. Let rise for about 30 minutes.

Cover each breadstick with a spoonful of pizza sauce, making sure to spread it evenly. Sprinkle cheese over the breadsticks. The amount of cheese you use depends on your preference of whether you want the breadsticks to be light or heavy on the cheese.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Allow to cool for a minute before using a pizza cutter to divide the breadsticks. This is best done when they are still warm. Once cooled, store in an airtight container.
