February Use It Up Challenge – Candles

The November Use It Up Challenge is here and it's all about tackling sentimental clutter.

Candles are a popular item to buy. With so many scents out there, it’s easy to want to own them all. In fact, you may find that you have a huge collection of candles in your home. The question is, are you actually using those candles? If you are, then you are on the right track. However, there are many people out there who buy candles regularly but rarely or never use them. Perhaps they don’t want to use up their favorite scent. Or they just like the look of the candle on their shelf. Whatever your reason for not using them, it’s time to make a change. The February Use It Up Challenge is all about using those candles that have been taking up space.

Let’s all enjoy the wonderful scents that we have brought into our homes by grabbing a match and lighting that wick!

February Use It Up Challenge

Where to start?

Similar to the January challenge, the first step is seeing just how many candles you have around your home. Check all of your drawers, cupboards, closets and any other place you may have them hidden. You might be surprised where you find candles hidden around the house. Perhaps you were trying to hide them from your significant other – you know, the one who is also saying you buy too many candles. Or perhaps you ran out of space so tucked them wherever you could.

If you are one of those people who purchase candles regularly, especially during sales, you may have quite the pile forming. Don’t despair! You may have a seemingly overwhelming number of candles, but by joining in on this challenge, we will work to reduce that number.

Are there scents that you no longer like? Don’t let those candles go to waste. Ask friends and family if they are interested in them. Remember, you can also donate them.

One important thing to remember is to not use candles you have set aside for emergencies. Don’t have any emergency candles? Now is the time to set a few aside for that. This way, should you be stuck in a power outage, you have a few candles that can be used during that time.

Which ones to use?

This is all up to you! Perhaps start with your favorite scents or ones that match the current season.

Choose a mix of scents and candle sizes. Those large pillar candles are great, but they do take a while to get through. Take advantage of the smaller candles that you can get through in a few days. Whichever ones you choose, set them in a place you can see them. Tucking them back into a closet will only let you forget about them once more.

Now all that’s left is to actually use them. Make an effort to use them daily. Got a craft project to work on? Light a candle while you are busy with that. Ready to dive into your next book? What better way to create ambiance than a great smelling candle. If you are home, have a candle burning. Just remember to put them out if you are leaving the house!

What I’m using up

While my candle collection isn’t overly huge, it could use some paring down.

For this month’s challenge, I have decided to focus on the smaller candles, as these will be used up quickly. Additionally, I will be working on one of my large jarred candles. Though these ones can take a while to get through, I know focusing on one will help me work through them more efficiently.

Scents to be used

  • Pine
  • Pumpkin Spice
  • Frost & Snowflake
  • Black Currant & Quince
  • Basil & Thyme
  • Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Skittles Melon Berry
  • Apple Cinnamon

With all those scents, my house is bound to smell wonderful over the course of the month. I would say I’m most looking forward to the black currant and quince candle. Why? Because it is the only one I have previously used, so I know it smells divine while burning.

Are you joining me for the February Use It Up Challenge? Let’s work together to use up those candles and clear some space in your home.

I am a candle addict! 😂 When my candles get too low for the wick to burn I put the candle in the freezer upside down for a little while. That helps the wax pop right out. Then I cut the wax into chunks and put them in my warmers.

Oh, that’s a great way to get the remnants out and not let them go to waste. I will have to remember that when my candles get down to the bottom.

I am so jealous right now:) a candle that smells like chocolate chip cookies sounds amazing! I am a constant candle user, with me it’s the opposite problem, I run out of it too fast:) I start every workday by lightning a candle on the dining table where I sit down to work, and I only put it out when the kids come home from school. In the evening I tend to light it up again:) LOVE your scent choices…

A friend sent me that one and I have yet to use it. But this is the month it will happen. I’m glad to hear you actively use your candles, even if you are constantly running out of them. Oh, that sounds like a great way to start your day.

I love the idea of a “use it up” challenge! I don’t have a ton of candles but I never burn the ones I do have. Time to use them up and get rid of them! Looking forward to other use it up challenges!

This is a very creative way to use up candles that are just sitting around the house. I am doing good in this area. I only have 2 candles for emergencies. Happy Blogging!

That’s An amazing idea, I love this! I have a lot of candles put all around the house. Sometimes I’m randomly burning one, but it takes a while before they’re used up. I mainly have many Christmas smells and many cookies/cakes smells. Problem with the latter is that they make me hungry lol

    I’m joining in for sure!

Thank you! It can take a while to burn through candles, especially those larger jarred candles, but even burning them for several hours a day makes a difference. Haha, I can totally understand that, burning my chocolate chip cookie candle makes me crave cookies so badly! Glad to hear you are joining in.

My daughter is a candle addict. No matter how fast I burn them, more will certainly follow. I currently have 10 just in my office. Lol

Oh boy, that sure sounds like a candle addict. As long as you are (mostly) keeping up with them as they come into the house then you are doing well.

I don’t even want to think about how many candles there are floating around our house. Oddly enough, however, it’s not because of me! Nope, my husband is an impulse buying candle hoarder the likes I have never seen before.

Thankfully he doesn’t mind burning them though! Definitely need to use some up.

That’s kind of funny that your husband is the one buying all of the candles because usually, it’s the wives that are the candle addicts. That’s good that he doesn’t mind burning them.
