Gather your wrapping paper, ribbons, and gift bags! It’s time for the December 2021 Use It Up Challenge. This month we are focusing on gift wrap. With the holidays on their way, now is the perfect time to use up your collection of gift wrap. Whether you hit the post-holiday sales last year to stock up or have a small collection leftover, let’s make an effort to use up what we have on hand.
December 2021 Use It Up Challenge – Gift Wrap
What is the Use It Up Challenge?
This is a monthly decluttering challenge that focuses on using the items instead of simply getting rid of them. This helps to reduce waste and also gets your money worth out of those items. Each month, a new category is chosen and we will focus on that category all month long. However, you don’t have to stop once that month ends. Keep decluttering and using up those items all year long. It will have a huge impact on your home and life at the end of the year.
If you are joining in, be sure to share your progress on social media using #IHUseItUp. I’d love to see how everyone is getting along with the challenge.
Where to start
As always, you want to delve into your closets and storage areas to find all of the rolls of wrapping paper, spools of ribbons, gift bags, and anything else you use. This will give you a good idea of how much you have on hand and this will help you determine if you have enough for the upcoming holidays. Perhaps you bought some on clearance last year and have plenty or you could be staring at several partial rolls.
Luckily, wrapping paper rarely goes bad, so even if it is a few years old, it should be useable. If there are any rips or wrinkles in it, you can easily work around or with those.
How to use it up
With the holidays coming up, this will be fairly easy. We all have gifts that will need wrapping. Try to use the rolls with the least amount of paper left first. From there, you can start with the fuller rolls, starting new rolls when necessary. Also, do your best to limit waste when wrapping, trying to cut the pieces as close to the size needed as possible. This will not only save on waste but make those rolls last longer. Don’t be afraid to mix and match paper on larger items. We have done this several times when there simply isn’t enough of one type of paper to wrap a gift or the gift is too large for what we have.
If you have gift bags laying around, be sure to take advantage of them. They are reusable for many years. While not every item can be put in a gift bag, thanks to either the size or weight of the item, they are a great alternative to wrapping paper that can often only be used once – unless you have some dedicated people who carefully unwrap and save that paper.
What I’ll be using up
Ironically, I actually need to buy more wrapping paper this year. Last year, we didn’t buy any and were busy using our small collection of them. This was great until I realized this year while digging out the remains that there wasn’t much left. This meant I would be needing to buy more in order to wrap our gifts.
We do have a number of gift bags we have been reusing for several years. Once again, we will be using those over the holiday season, but they aren’t always the right size for our needs, and that’s where wrapping paper comes into play.
