Baked double-chocolate donuts, a quick and easy treat

Donuts are a treat that many people enjoy. Yet when we want them, we often find ourselves having to run to the grocery store or coffee shop to satisfy our cravings. Not any more. It’s time to start making your donuts at home. These baked double-chocolate donuts are quick and easy to make and are oh so delicious. Once you have had homemade donuts, you will never go back to the store-bought ones again. Bake yourself and your family something special now that will help satisfy your chocolate and donut cravings.

Because these donuts are baked and not fried, the most important thing you will need is a donut pan. In fact, you will need two since this recipe makes a dozen donuts. You can half the recipe if you want, but I assure you that you will want the full dozen once you take your first bite of these delicious treats.

Baked double-chocolate donuts

Ingredients

For the donuts

  • 2 cups cake flour, sifted
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp butter, melted

For the icing

  • icing sugar
  • cocoa powder
  • milk
  • butter. melted

Toppings, optional

  • sprinkles
  • coconut
  • chopped nuts
  • candy

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spray donut tray with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together all dry ingredients. Stir to combine.
  3. Add buttermilk, eggs, and butter and stir gently until combined.
  4. Put batter into a piping bag or a plastic bag and squeeze into donut tray until each cavity is 2/3 full.
  5. Bake for 7-9 minutes. The top of the donut should spring back when touched. Remove from oven and allow to cool in the tray for about 5 minutes. Remove from tray and place on a cooling rack.
  6. Combine icing sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and butter to make the icing. The exact amounts of each ingredient will depend on how thick you want your icing. Start with about 1 1/2 cups of icing sugar and 1 Tbsp of cocoa powder. Slowly add milk and the melted butter until the icing reaches your preferred consistency.
  7. Dip each cooled donut into the icing and then place it back onto the cooling rack. While the icing is still soft, add your desired toppings. Repeat for all donuts, then allow them to sit until the icing has set.
  8. Store in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
