August 2021 Bokksu – Moon Festival

When it comes to subscription boxes, the best ones are packed full of food. That is why I love Bokksu so much. Not only is it full of snacks, but Bokksu highlights the flavors and textures of traditional Japanese snacks, often focusing on a particular flavor or event as the month’s theme. The August 2021 Bokksu was focused on the Moon Festival. The pamphlet includes the folktale of the rabbit on the moon along with a few Japanese words to learn. I have enjoyed Bokksu in the past, such as the July 2021 Bokksu. If you are looking to experience the flavors of Japan without having to travel halfway across the world, then Bokksu is an excellent way to do it.

August 2021 Bokksu – Moon Festival

Black Sesame Cookie

This treat was a bit of a surprise for me. More often than not, I find black sesame to be a bit too strong, almost acrid in taste. Yet these cookies were fantastic. I didn’t even taste the black sesame at all. I would have happily ate more of them, but sadly there were only 2 cookies in the box.

Black Strawberry

Chocolate-covered strawberries are a fantastic treat. However, I will say that I am not the biggest fan of dark chocolate – in fact, I normally avoid consuming it at all costs. I did give these a try, hoping that I would like them, but sadly the dark chocolate flavor was overpowering and drowned out of the strawberry. I’m sure that anyone who loves dark chocolate would have enjoyed these.

Setouchi Lemon Mochi

Normally, lemon isn’t a flavor I love. That being said, I have found that many lemon-flavored snacks from Japan are very subtle with the flavor and this mochi was no exception. The chewy mochi was fantastic and that slight hint of lemon made the entire treat come to life.

Kurumi Walnut Mochi

This mochi was good but not as good as the lemon mochi. I think the small pieces of walnuts took away from the chewiness of the mochi. All in all, it was good but not great.

Rich Baked Chocolate

Another dark chocolate treat. I did try this one, in hopes that perhaps it was dark chocolate I could tolerate. But once again, I found it to be too strong.

Toritama Baumkuchen: Matcha

This was my favorite item of the month. The cake was extremely unique looking, with its multiple layers. The texture was soft as if it had been baked that day. Even the matcha flavor was fantastic, and I’m not the biggest fan of matcha. I could have easily eaten a dozen of these.

Funwari Meijin Mocki Puffs: Black Syrup Kinako

I love mochi puffs, so these were a winner. I didn’t taste much of a kinako in them, but even so, they were a nice lightly crunchy snack.

Ishigakijima Chili Oil Chips

I have expected these to be quite hot, and while there was a bit of a kick to them, they were not overly spicy. They made an excellent little snack to help tie me over until the next meal.

Salted Black Bitter Chocolate Chinsuki

They weren’t kidding when they said this was bitter. One bite was all I could handle of this bitter snack. I couldn’t even identify the flavors of it the bitterness was that overwhelming. This is one of those snacks for certain palates, not everyone will like it.

Usagi no Shippo: Green Tea Bun

This was another fantastic treat. These little buns were soft, moist, and not too overly flavored with green tea. I really enjoyed these and my only complaint is that they didn’t include enough of them as they were highly addictive.

Potato Snack: corn Potage Flavor

I’ve had these before in previous Bokksu boxes, so I knew I would love them. In fact, I was so excited that they were included this month that they were one of the first snacks I ate. If you love the taste of sweet corn then these snacks will be right up your alley.

Hoshino Hojicha Latte

Tea and lattes are not something I enjoy. Yet I always do my best to try the teas included in Bokksu. This one was okay, but not something I could see myself drink more than once.

Shikamasu Otsumamu Chinsuko

These cheesy spicy crackers were different. The first few I had were alright, I didn’t really taste the cheese but the spice was certainly there. However, after a few the spice started to build up and I hit my limit quickly.

All in all, I enjoyed this month’s Bokksu. Sure, there were items I didn’t love, but that’s fine, I won’t know if I like them until I try them. Really the only negative was that the box arrived late, so I wasn’t able to enjoy it and share my thoughts on it in August. I hope you enjoyed my review of the August 2021 Bokksu. Have you tried Bokksu yet?
