Canada Day is just around the corner. For weeks now the stores have been filling up with Canadian flags and other red and white items. There will be barbeques, red and white food, and fireworks galore. But what about other ways to celebrate Canada Day? As a proud Canadian, consider doing something to celebrate the day that would make Canada proud of you. These 5 unique ways to celebrate Canada Day will help you do just that. The best part of these ideas is that they are budget-friendly.
But Canada is full of trees, you say. Well, yes and no. It all depends on where you are. Yes, there are tons of trees in Canada, but there is nothing wrong with planting more. Of course, you need to know where it is okay to plant ahead of time. Check with your town or city hall to see if there is an area where you are allowed to plant. Planting trees if your own yard should be fine.
Alternatively, you can donate to a tree planting organization. Tree Canada is a well-known tree planting charity. You can either donate to them directly or sign up to join one of their tree planting days.
Clean up your town or city
Litter sadly still happens. Unfortunately, not everyone has respect for the land they live on or visit. It may not sound like a glorious thing to do on Canada Day but just imagine how good you will feel and how beautiful your town will look if you pick up the trash you see. A little bit can go a long way. You likely already know an area where litter seems to be a regular issue. Grab some gloves, a couple of trash bags and gather up your friends and family then get to work. Who knows, you may even inspire others to join you if they see you cleaning up.
Visit a National or Provincial Park
There are a lot of great National and Provincial parks to visit across Canada. Chances are there is one near you. Pack some snacks and drinks and head out to your local park. Take an afternoon hike or camp for the night. Enjoy all that nature has to offer in these areas.
Not sure where the closest park is to you? Check out the Parks Canada website for all the necessary information.
Volunteer at an animal shelter or food bank
Though these might not be open on Canada Day, you can still make the effort to volunteer and give back to your community and country. Find some time when you can volunteer. Whether it is before or after the holiday. Something as simple as walking a couple of shelter dogs will benefit them with companionship and you with some fresh air and exercise. If you don’t have the time to volunteer, then considering donating money or items that are needed. Either way, you will be helping someone out.
Canada Day scavenger hunt
With all the activities going on, there is an endless supply of things to find for a Canada Day scavenger hunt. Be sure to mix it up. You can add things that will be easy to find, like a Canadian flag, but also add some harder to find items. Pick at least one item that is unique to your area but not necessarily easy to spot. This will make the game more exciting. Don’t forget to have some small prizes for those who complete the scavenger hunt.
Bonus: Eat poutine!
Okay, I had to include this one. Nothing says Canada Day more than stuffing your face with poutine. Either head to a local restaurant or make it yourself. Fries, cheese curds and gravy are all easy enough to acquire or make. Add it to your BBQ meal plan for that extra Canadian touch.
These are just a few ideas of things to do. With these 5 unique ways to celebrate Canada Day, you are sure to have a fun-filled day. Of course, if you still want to partake in the typical BBQ, red and white everything, and the evening fireworks show, that’s fine too. Just try to do something nice for Canada while you are at it.
